Mayor Jones Announces Summer Employment Opportunities For 2014 Mayor’s Youth Academy

The Mayor’s Youth Academy (MYA) is now accepting applications for the 2014 MYA Summer Employment programs. Launched by Mayor Jones in 2010, MYA is designed to develop Richmond’s future leaders and workforce. Youth ages 13 through 19 years old are encouraged to apply.

“I am strongly encouraging the city’s youth to apply for this tremendous opportunity for summer employment,” said Mayor Jones. “The collaboration between MYA and our community business partners will permit youth to develop relationships with international youth, gain valuable work experience while earning income to save or spend in our local economy, and offer the potential for full-time careers.”

New for the summer of 2014, the academy is offering a MYA Junior program. Recognizing the need for earlier career development intervention, the MYA Junior offering will target middle school youth and provide them Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related experiential learning opportunities and age appropriate introduction to STEM vocations and careers. Program components include the science of roller coasters at Kings Dominion, robotic engineering at ECPI-U, exposure to regional STEM job sites and employers through site visits, and much more. MYA Junior incentives include a Supernova family membership to the Science Museum of Virginia, a graphing calculator, and a $150 incentive payment upon successful completion of all program requirements.

It is the mission of MYA to provide development opportunities to youth throughout the city to include: job readiness training, leadership development, exposure to entrepreneurship, mentoring and post-secondary career exploration. Selected youth will receive real work experience and gain skills necessary for future employment.

MYA will accept applications for all programs beginning Saturday, March 1 through Monday, March 24. Applications will be available at all Richmond public high schools and at www.RichmondGov.com/MayorsYouthAcademy. Youth may also apply in person on Mondays and Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the MYA offices in the East District Initiative, 701 North 25th Street.
