Street Closure - Cedar Street

WHO:  City of Richmond Department of Public Works WHAT:  Street Closure WHERE:  Cedar Street between East Marshall Street and Mosby Street WHEN:  Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 24, 8 a.m. To 4:30 p.m.  BACKGROUND: The aforementioned area will be closed to allow for construction during the stabilization of the slope along Cedar Street.

Richmond Earth Day Festival: Rain Barrel Contest

The Department of Public Utilities encourages everyone to vote for your favorite rain barrel painted by Richmond Public School 5th graders.  Winners will be announced April 17, 2015, and the winning barrels will be displayed at the Earth Day Festival, April 18th at Great Shiplock Park.  Voting is open to all City employees, as well as, the general public. City to Celebrate Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 7

Mayor Dwight C. Jones and the City’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) initiative will spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve within the city during a kick-off ceremony on Tuesday, April 7 for the third annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service . The 9 a.m. event is being held at Ann Hardy Plaza Community Center, 3300 First Avenue. Richmond City Councilwoman Ellen Robertson, 6th District, and Richmond City Councilman Parker Agelasto, 5th District will be attending the ceremony. More than 2,200 mayors from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico will hold public events and use both traditional and social media to highlight the value and impact of national service to the nation’s cities. This initiative is being led by the federal agency for service and volunteerism, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), along with Cities of Service and the National League of Cities. City’s Cold Weather Overflow Shelter Open Saturday, April 4

The City’s Cold Weather Overflow Shelter will open on Saturday, April 4 as overnight temperatures are forecast to remain at or below 40 degrees. The overflow shelter is located in the City’s Public Safety Building at 505 North 9th Street. The shelter entrance is the second entrance on the 9th Street side of the building closest to Leigh Street. The shelter opens at 7 p.m. and closes the following morning at 6 a.m. Shelter registration will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Food will not be provided and pets are not allowed.   Residents in need of overnight shelter are asked to report to Commonwealth Catholic Charities Homeless Point of Entry during operational hours for a comprehensive intake and referral to the appropriate shelter. RPD’s Warrants & Information Services Unit to Move

The Richmond Police Department’s Warrants & Information Services Unit will soon be relocated from police headquarters, 200 West Grace Street to the Richmond City Justice Center, 1701 Fairfield Way. The move, which will take place in early May, will complete a plan to consolidate several aspects of criminal justice services at the Justice Center.  ”Having many elements of the criminal justice system in one place will make it more efficient,” said Chief Alfred Durham. “It will be helpful to both citizens and police officers to be able to access these services at one location.” The Warrants & Information Services Unit supports RPD officers with timely updates on warrants and other database information. Last month, the Richmond Magistrate’s Office and the city’s lock-up were moved to the Justice Center. Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) is celebrating Easter early with an egg adoption special. Wednesday, April 1 & Thursday, April 2 choose an egg out of our Easter basket for a reduced fee adoption. There are even a few "fee waived" eggs! Huguenot HS Hosts 2015 Arts Festival

WHAT:            Huguenot High School (HHS) will present its 2015 Arts Festival in association with the Cadence Theater Company. The event will showcase students delivering a variety of musical and spoken word performances based on James Thurber's work, The Last Flower .                          Advance tickets will be on sale for $3 at Huguenot High School on Tuesday, March 31  and Wednesday, April 1. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door for $5 at 5:30 p.m. on April 2.
