City’s Latest Bicycle Safety Enhancement Project Spans 3 Corridors

Road diet designed to increase safety for cyclists

City cyclists soon will have additional areas to ride safely with a construction project set to start Monday, March 16 that is designed to enhance their mobility and safety.

The Bicycle Accommodations Improvement Project will include:
  • Patterson Avenue from Commonwealth Avenue to North Thompson Street
  • Malvern Avenue from Cary Street Road to Cutshaw Avenue
  • Brook Road from Azalea Avenue to West Charity Street
At completion of the project there will be new pavement markings, signage and vertical flexible delineators for the bike lanes, as well as a separated buffered bike lane close to the curb that will provide an additional layer of comfort for bicyclists since parked cars will be adjacent to the new bike lane, separating the cyclists from moving traffic.

This ‘road diet’ will lower instances of speeding, making it safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. It aligns with the city’s Vision Zero initiative to increase road safety and eliminate crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.

The project is expected to be completed in nine months; however, not all corridors will be impacted for the duration.

The $1.5 million project is funded through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
